What is hyperpigmentation?
Some people develop spots on their skin or nails that are darker than their normal skin tone, which is caused by excess production of melanin, the protein that determines skin color. This condition is called hyperpigmentation. It has several causes, but especially excess sun exposure. The ultraviolet light from the sun stimulates melanin production, and hyperpigmentation occurs in skin areas with a large concentration of melanocytes. The condition can also manifest as discolored spots that form in places where acne has healed.
What is IPL?
Fortunately, the xeo’s IPL (intense pulse light) system is excellent for treating many types of skin conditions, including hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and skin redness. The system is completely safe on skin types I-III, but darker skin types may require caution to ensure the device does not cause pigmentation irregularities. Our staff will sweep the handheld IPL device over the target area, which delivers a broad spectrum of light. Patients may decide to use topical numbing for comfort during the procedure. After treatment, the targeted skin will darken over the next 24 to 48 hours, then shed within a period of one to two weeks, revealing a fresh, new layer of skin beneath. The new skin is clear, revitalized, and radiant.
What is the treatment like?
This brief, minimally invasive treatment has a very short downtime. Patients can even repeat the procedure to address additional skin conditions. The advantage of IPL over traditional laser systems is clear. Lasers can deliver only a single wavelength of light to the skin, meaning that they usually treat a single condition. IPL, however, delivers a broad spectrum of light, which can be adjusted and filtered to address multiple conditions in the same treatment. With its safe, fast, and smooth operation, the IPL system is a huge advance over previous treatment methods.
If you have spots on your skin that are different from your natural color, whether they’re sun damage, facial flushing, or even freckles, then the xeo’s IPL treatment may be right for you.
